Earnhardt Jr. And Mears Penalized

Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Casey Mears have now been penalized for their post race incident Saturday night in Phoenix.

NASCAR has placed the two former teammates on probation for the next six weeks, but neither will be fined either money or points. Officials said Saturday night that the two drivers would not be penalized for their incident.

"We had a weekly competition meeting, we had a good discussion about it, and we decided to put the drivers on probation so the situation did not escalate," said NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston.

The two initially got together with 11 laps to go, which resulted in Dale Jr. be spun in to the outside wall, taking away what had been a good run for Jr. He led 63 laps and was en route to a top 10 finish, but after the wreck he dropped to 31st.

On the cool down laps Earnhardt Jr. found Mears and spun him out. Mears then drove by several cars and met up with Earnhardt Jr. on pit road and him in the rear bumper.

The two drivers, who drove for Hendrick Motorsports last season are off to disappointing starts with Earnhardt Jr. 19th in the standing, and Mears in 22nd. This is Casey Mears' first season in the Richard Childress number 07.

Their probations will begin this week at Talladega and will end June 31 at Dover.
