Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing Shuts Down The 8
Tuesday, April 7, 2009Posted by
Just a few years ago the number 8 car was driven by NASCAR’s most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., now it is being shut down by Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing.
According to many sources close to the situation, the team has shut down the team until funding is found. Aric Almirola currently drives the 8. An announcement is expected within the next 24 hours.
EGR has yet to say anything on the situation, but it looks as if most of the employees of the team will be let go, that number could reach 50 people let go.
Currently the 8 is 37th in Owner’s Points, and he is only 57 points rookie driver Joey Logano for the 35th spot in the standings, that of course means he would be locked into the race.
After six starts Almirola has an average finish of 33, and is yet to post a finish of higher that 21st, and has not placed above 33rd in his past three races.
This now leaves EGR down to two teams, the 1 of Martin Truex Jr., and the 42 of Juan Pablo Montoya. It was reported earlier in the week that Truex has a contract clause that allows him to leave the team if he has less than two teammates. It was also reported the Joe Gibbs Racing would be interested in Truex if he became available, however both rumors were shot down.
Between 2000 and 2007 Dale Jr. won 17 races in the number 8, for the team his late father Dale Sr. started.
