Prank Gone Wrong
Wednesday, April 1, 2009Posted by
It only happens once a year, April 1, 2009, better known as April fool’s Day. A one day pass to pull off pranks and for the large part get away with them, all while sharing a few good laughs. However one subject you should stay away from completely is NASCAR, as Car And Driver Magazine found out the hard way.
All Car And Driver wanted to do was poke a little fun in to the current Automotive Industry crisis and bailout. The reputable magazine ran a fake story about President Obama ordering GM and Chrysler to pull all support and sponsorship from NASCAR if they wanted to receive federal funds. Even in just for a split second, diehard fans had to imagine a world were Toyota, Nissan and Honda dominated the NASCAR scene that of course brought outrage.
Almost instantly web sites and blogs were livid at President Obama for having said this, and the words “Obama, NASCAR” became a top search item at Twitter. Despite the magazine labeling the story fake, it still brought massive outrage. Car And Driver later apologized having said they went “Too far.”
There is no reason to worry, GM, Chrysler and Ford all still remain 100% committed to the sport, for the moment.
