WVU’s Smith Out with Broken Foot

West Virginia freshman quarterback Eugene Smith is expected to be out six to eight weeks after suffering a broken bone in his left foot. Smith was a top recruit from the Mountaineer’s 2009 signing class.

Smith was competing for the second string quarterback job against Coley White, who is the younger brother of former WVU star quarterback Pat White. The starting job will be taken by fifth-year senior Jarrett Brown. Brown was White’s backup in the past four seasons.

Smith has a great chance to become the starter in the future for the Mountaineers. Smith threw for 3,089 yards and 32 touchdowns last year at Miramar High School, which is located in Florida.

He was injured last week in an off-field incident. The broken foot could lead to Smith missing most of the team’s preseason camp. This loss affects the Mountaineer’s depth at the quarterback position. Brown needs to stay healthy this season for Bill Stewart's squad to compete for the Big East championship.
