2010 Olympics a Success to Say the Least
Wednesday, March 3, 2010Posted by Cedric Harmon
The 2010 Olympics in Vancouver were indeed a success this year. Usually, the Olympics are unpredictable when it comes to popularity in the States. However, this year was the highest in the last few Olympics as far as television viewings. This year, The United States took home 37 total medals to lead al countries in medal count. Canada led all countries with 14 gold medals. One in which came over a hard fought battle against the U.S. in hockey.
In the Hockey game, Canadian player Sidney Crosby scored the game winning goal in overtime. The final score Sunday was 3-2 and Canada became the first host country to capture men’s hockey gold in the last 30 years. Canada indeed had a lot to celebrate. Crosby stated after the win, “It doesn’t even feel real. It feels like a dream.” This was Canada’s eighth total gold medal in men’s hockey in the sports history.
Along with leading in total medals, the U.S. led in silver and bronze medals. We tied for third in gold medals. Ranking last in the medal count was Kazakhstan, Estonia, and Great Britain. All of these teams gained only one medal each for their countries.
The Olympics this year also suffered tragedy early on Feb.12. Nodar Kumaritashvili, a Georgian luge slider died after crashing during a training run and hitting a metal pole. The 21-year old apparently told his father prior to his run that he was terrified of the track. The track had been called the fastest ever, and according to the Associate Press, concerns had been raised before the fatal accident. Other players, including four from America had trouble down the track and had concerns about the Olympic game. In the Huffington Post, Australia’s Hannah Cambell-Pegg was quoted for saying “I think they are pushing it a little too much...To what extent are we just little lemmings that they just throw down a track and we're crash-test dummies? I mean, this is our lives."
Although it suffered from tragedy, the Olympics lived up to its hype this year and was a success to say the least. The Olympics are a time of for many different people and cultures to come together and interact in a way in which shows equality and pure talent. It doesn’t focus on world issues or war conflicts; it simply brings together the best athletes from all around to compete in the greatest games ever. The Olympics also helps bring spectators from all over to one place. After watching several Olympic televised events, crowd reactions all seemed to love the fact that everyone was so friendly. The fans believed that the Olympics do more to the world as a whole than just focus on sports. It brings people together.
