Skipping to the Bank: Schumaker, Cardinals Agree to Long-Term Deal
Tuesday, February 9, 2010Posted by Andy Ouriel
The St.Louis Cardinals avoided arbitration with Skip Schumaker after the team signed him to a two-year, $4.7 millon contract Monday night, according to The Associated Press
Schumaker will receive $2 million next season and $2.7 million in 2011. Certain incentives reached could increase the deal to $5 million.
Shumaker has a little more than three years of service time. If he stays healthy and in the major leagues for a good portion over the next two seasons, he will still be under team control after his new deal ends. Schumaker is not scheduled to hit free agency until after the 2012.
The outfielder-turned second baseman hit .303 with four home runs and 35 RBIs. 2009 was the third consecutive season Schumaker hit above .300 (.302 in 2008, .333 in 2007).
Schumaker had requested $2.75 million with the Cardinals countering with a $1.45 million salary, according to The AP.
