Minnie Dog: Hudson, Twins Agree to Deal
Friday, February 5, 2010Posted by Andy Ouriel
The Minnesota Twins have signed Orlando Hudson to a one-year, $5 million deal Thursday evening, reported by Curtis Kitchen of WHB Radio in Kansas City and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
The Twins, who won the American League Central Division championship in 2009, figure to be the preseason favorites to appear in the postseason again, especially with the recent signing of Hudson.
"I know it's a great place to play," Hudson said in a MLB.com report. "I'm happy for the chance to be a Minnesota Twin. I'm definitely looking forward to it."
The 32-year-old hit .283 with nine home runs, 62 RBIs an a .357 on-base percentage in 149 games last season for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Hudson is a career .282 hitter, won four Golden Glove Awards and two All-Star Game appearances in eight career seasons. Twins general manager Bill Smith said he knows Hudson can be a productive addition to the team.
"He's a proven player... and we're excited to have him in this organization and he's going to help make us a better team," Smith said in a MLB.com report.
Reportedly, Hudson had turned down two other offers from teams not expected to contend in 2010. The Washington Nationals offered Hudson a one-year, $4 million contract and the Cleveland Indians proposed a two-year, $10 million contract, both of which Hudson declined before signing with Minnesota.
The "O-Dog" wasn't the only new addition to the Twins Thursday.
The team formally announced the signing of designated hitter Jim Thome.
In addition to bringing in new players, the team is trying to extend the face of the franchise.
The Twins have aggressively been negotiating with MVP and three-time batting champion Joe Mauer to an extension. Reports state the extension is worth $200 million over 10 years.
Hudson's salary puts the Twins payroll at $96 million -- $30 million more than last season, according to MLB.com.
