Kennedy, Nationals Agree to One-Year Contract

The Washington Nationals filled their second base vacancy, yet it wasn't the player they exactly wanted.
After the Minnesota Twins agreed to a one-year contract Thursday night, the Nationals countered by signing 11-year veteran Adam Kennedy to a one-year, $1.25 million contract, first reported by Bill Ladson of MLB.com.
The contract includes a $2 million team option for 2010, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.com.
Kennedy, 34, had one of the best seasons last year with the Oakland Athletics. He collected 153 hits with 11 home runs, 63 RBIs, 20 stolen bases and a .289 batting average.
Kennedy's signing now confirms the Nationals middle infield plans for next season.
Before the signing, the Nationals were considering moving Christian Guzman to second base so top prospect Ian Desmond could play shortstop. But with Kennedy joining the Nationals, Guzman will remain at shortstop with Desmond starting 2010 at the minor league level.
