Rockies sign Infielder Mora
Sunday, January 31, 2010Posted by Andy Ouriel
The Colorado Rockies have signed third baseman Melvin Mora to a one-year, $1.275 million deal on Sunday, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Mora hit .260, eight home runs and 48 RBIs in 125 for the Baltimore Orioles last season. The 38-year-old had a much better 2008 with a .285 batting average, 23 home runs and tied a career high with 104 RBIs.
Mora is a two-time All-Star and won the Silver Slugger Award in 2004 -- the award given to the best offensive player at their position in their respected league.
But at 38, Mora might be limited with the bat, but the Rockies could use beyond third base in 2010.
Primarily a third baseman during the past six seasons with the Orioles, Mora has played second base, shortstop and all three outfield positions in his 14-year career.
The signing is also a reaction to the Rockies failing to sign shortstop Orlando Cabrera. The Reds signed him to a one-year deal on Saturday.
