Edmonds Joins Brewers
Thursday, January 28, 2010Posted by Andy Ouriel
Jim Edmonds, a perennial All-Star and Golden Glove Award winner throughout his 16-year career, agreed to a minor league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday.
The signing was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
If he makes the Brewers team at any time during the season, Edmonds will make $850,000 and could make an additional $1.65 million in incentives, reported by MLB Trade Rumors.
But Edmonds will have to earn a spot on the major league roster during Spring Training if he wants to play somewhere he hasn't in over a year.
The Fullerton, California native decided to not play last season after all 30 teams neglected to offer Edmonds a contract. Edmonds couldn't find a home to play because he priced himself out of a contract -- similar to Johnny Damon this year who still is a free agent.
The 39-year-old last played in 2008 with the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs. He hit .235 with 20 home runs, 55 RBIs over the course of the season.
He has also amassed an impressive career.
Edmonds is a lifetime .284 hitter, appeared in four All-Star games and has earned eight Golden Glove Awards, including six straight wins from 2000-05.
"He's hit for power, he's got experience, he knows the division," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Thursday in an Associated Press report via USA Today.
"He's a left-handed hitter, brings experience and has Gold Gloves on his side. He may have lost a step or two, but we know what he brings."
Edmonds will have to compete with newly-acquired outfielder Carlos Gomez for a spot on the 25-man roster. Gomez, who was traded from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for shortstop J.J. Hardy earlier this offseason, is slated to be the Brewers Opening Day center fielder.
However, Edmonds has a good shot of making the team because he is somewhat of a specialist. Other than Jody Gerut, Edmonds is the only left-handed hitting outfielder on the Brewers' roster, according to the AP.
