White Sox ship Thome, Contreras to N.L. West

The Chicago White Sox, who have fallen to four games under .500 and six games behind the first place Detroit Tigers, said goodbye to two of its veterans Monday night.

Just before the midnight waiver trade deadline, Chicago shipped slugging designated hitter to the Los Angeles Dodgers and starting pitcher Jose Contreras to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for minor leaguers.

The 39 year old left handed hitting Thome was hitting .249 with 23 homers and 74 RBIs with the White Sox.

Over his four year stint on the South Side, which began in 2006, Thome slugged 134 homers while knocking in 369 runs. Despite his age and declining numbers, Thome remained a major presence in the middle of Chicago’s lineup, and will serve as a left-handed power bat off the Dodger bench.

Meanwhile, the Rockies hope they bolstered their pitching staff for the stretch-run by acquiring one of Chicago’s World Series heroes in 2005, Jose Contreras.

Contreras, whose exact age is still a mystery, had been struggling for the White Sox recently.

In 2009, the Cuban defect is just 5-13 with a 5.42 E.R.A.

Contreras has also spent time in the minors this season, and since the All-Star break is 1-6 with a 6.97 E.R.A. He will pitch out of the Rockies bullpen for the time being.

The White Sox also activated rookie second baseman Chris Getz following the two waiver deals.
