White Sox, Mark Buehrle Perfect Against Rays
Thursday, July 23, 2009Posted by Eddie Carroll
Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Mark Buehrle threw a perfect game against the Rays Thursday afternoon in front of 28,000 fans at U.S. Cellular Field.
The 30 year old lefty, who is known for being one of the fastest working pitchers in baseball, improved his record to 11-3 on the season and catapulted the White Sox into a first place tie in the A.L. Central.
In April of 2007, Buehrle tossed a no hitter against the Texas Rangers, a game in which he walked Sammy Sosa only to pick him off of first base moments later.
Today, Buehrle wouldn’t make the same mistake.
Chicago outfielder Dewayne Wise, a 9th inning defensive replacement in center field, made a wall-climbing catch to rob Gabe Kapler of a homerun to record the first out of the 9th inning.
Buehrle then retired the next two hitters in typical fashion, striking out Michel Hernandez and getting Jason Bartlett to ground out to clinch perfection.
It was the 18th perfect game thrown in Major League history, and the first since Randy Johnson did so in 2004.
