Boston Acquires LaRoche and Duncan
Thursday, July 23, 2009Posted by Phillip Lee
Ready to go deep into the season, the Red Sox acquired Adam LaRoche from the Pirates and Chris Duncan from the Cardinals in separate deals.
LaRoche was traded in exchange for Double-A shortstop Argenis Diaz and Class-A right-hander Hunter Strickland. The Pirates have traded six of their regular starters since last July, including the trade that also sent All-Star outfielder Jason Bay to the Red Sox.
LaRoche has struggled this season batting .247 with 12 long balls but will help out the ailing hips of Mike Lowell.
In a separate deal, the Red Sox acquired Chris Duncan, a player to be named later, and an undisclosed amount of cash in exchange for the struggling Julio Lugo who has only played in 37 games thus far into this season.
Chris Duncan does not necessarily "plug" a hole left by Julio Lugo. However, this move gives the BoSox much needed flexibility and depth on the roster.
