Yankees Sweep Twins Behind Teixeira’s First Homer in 96 AB’s
Thursday, July 9, 2009Posted by Phillip Lee
The Yankees swept the Minnesota Twins Thursday taking the last game of the three-game set by a score of 6-4. With the win today and a loss by the Red Sox against the Royals, the two teams ended the day tied for first place in the AL East.
Alfredo Aceves started for the Yankees in place of Chin-Ming Wang who finds himself once again on the DL with a strained right shoulder. Aceves' spot-start didn't go quite as well though as he stepped off the mound after only 3 1/3 innings and gave up 4 runs, 3 of it earned.
The Yankees caught a break though as Francisco Liriano took the loss giving up 6 runs in 5 1/3 innings including a 420 feet solo blast to Mark Teixeira.
After being home-run-less since June 12th against the Mets, Teixeira finally got one to go out of the park in 96 at-bats. His 21st home-run came at a good time as the Yankees needed every run as the shaky bullpen tried its best to hold the lead.
The Yankees head to Anaheim Friday to kick off a three game series against the Angels. Joba Chamberlain is scheduled to start for the Yankees and the Angels will be countering with Joe Saunders.
