Antropov Signs Four-Year, $16 million Deal with Trashers
Thursday, July 2, 2009The veteran forward Nik Antropov has agreed to terms with the Atlanta Trahsers on a four-year deal that will pay $16 million.
The 29-year old ended his nine-year career with the Toronto Maple Leafs at the trade deadline earlier this year, when the club sent him packing to the New York Rangers in exchange for a second round draft pick in 2009 as well as a conditional draft pick in 2010.
Antropov's seven goals and 13 points in 18 games with New York was part of a career-best season. He finished the campaign with 28 goals and 59 points in 81 games played.
The native of Kazakhstan was selected 10th overall by the Maple Leafs in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
The Trashers have also re-signed forward Chris Thorburn to a multi-year deal, though terms were not disclosed.
Thorburn, 26, tallied seven goals and 15 points in 82 games last season. In 196 career games with the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins and Atlanta, he has 15 goals, 39 points and 272 penalty minutes.
Atlanta's star player Ilya Kovalchuk has made his complaints public urging the team to acquire more star players if they wanted to make a serious commitment to success. Kovalchuk, who is able to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season, told Thrashers' GM Don Waddell that he would leave the club unless changes were made.
Atlanta's franchise has been a mess for quite some time. During the season of their lone franchise playoff appearance in 2006-07, they implied the philosophy "go big or go home" and it back fired on them. They traded young stud defenseman Braydon Coburn to the Philadelphia Flyers for fellow blueliner Alexei Zhitnik, who was past his prime. Atlanta gave up a lot to acquire veteran Keith Tkachuk from St. Louis. They sent the Blues Glen Metropolit, a first and third round pick in 2007, second round pick in 2008, and a conditional first round pick in 2008. With their resources depleted, the Trashers have been a mediocre team ever since.
