Orioles Rally Back Against Red Sox for a Historical Win

John Smoltz threw four innings while giving up only 1 run on 3 hits and 1 walk and the Red Sox lead by as much at 10-1 up until the 7th inning against the Baltimore Orioles.

Smoltz only threw four innings because of a rain delay that not only prevented him from earning his 211th win but also set things up for disaster for the Red Sox.

Orioles starting pitcher Rich Hill gave up 9 hits and 3 walks for a total of 9 runs (7 earned) in 3 1/3 innings. After that though, the Orioles bullpen held up nicely to combine for only 1 earned run in 5 2/3 innings.

Despite Smoltz' four solid innings, the Red Sox bullpen blew up in the 7th and 8th innings to make the impossible, possible.

The Orioles got 13 of their 16 hits in the 7th and 8th innings. Oscar Salazar's three run homer in the 7th inning against Masterson helped make the score 10-6 by the 8th inning.

In the 8th, the rookie Wieters hit an RBI single, Wigginton hit a sacrifice fly, Brian Roberts hit another RBI single, and Nick Markakis put the nail in the coffin with a double to center against Papelbon to make the game 10-11 Orioles.

Papelbon was charged with a blown save, and his quest to surpass Bob Stanley's career record for saves with Boston was put on a halt.

The come-back is especially shocking because the Red Sox had won eight straight games against the Orioles dating back to last season. In addition Papelbon was 20-20 in save opportunities against the Orioles.

The Red Sox complete their three game series against the Orioles today.
