More Trouble for Zambrano and the Cubs

Carlos Zambrano could be even in more trouble, but this time, for his actions off the field. Zambrano was not present for the Cubs’ flight to Atlanta on Monday and now could face disciplinary actions from the Cubs because of it. Reports say that Zambrano was summoned to manager Lou Piniella’s office for a short meeting, but neither side refused to comment on the subject matter of that conference. For Zambrano, who is currently serving his 6-game suspension for his tirade against the Pirates last Wednesday, things seem to be going from bad to worse.

Big Z’s actions aren’t the only thing that the Cubs should be worried about. Picked by many to compete for the NL Central title and possibly a World Series championship, the Cubs have played mediocre .500 baseball at best this season. Their current record is 25-25 and they sit in 4th place in the NL Central; 4 games out of first.  Injuries, offensive slumps and a shaky bullpen have been major plagues on the Cubs this season. The actions of Zambrano are just not what the Cubs need at the moment.

To add to the Cubs’ frustrations, they added another tough loss to their record on Tuesday. Randy Wells, starting for the suspended Zambrano, took a no-hit bid in the 7th inning against the Atlanta Braves. He eventually lost the no-hitter and shutout, but left the game with a 5-1 advantage. It wasn’t enough for the back end of the bullpen as Carlos Marmol and Kevin Gregg squandered the lead, which lead to the Cubs’ eventual loss in 12 innings. This is the perfect example of the types of frustrating games for the Cubs this season.

To make matters worse, the Cubs’ right fielder Milton Bradley left the game in the 4th inning with a strained calf. Thankfully for the Cubs, his injury is minor and he is listed as day-to-day.
