Celtics GM Ainge in Hospital After Heart Attack

Someone who suffers a heart attack would usually say it was a build up of many things that landed him or her in that position.

So perhaps it was the news of Kevin Garnett being unable to play in the playoffs that was the final straw for Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge.

Thursday morning, the same day coach Doc Rivers announced that Boston will be without its 6-foot-11 leader for at least one round of the playoffs, Ainge was brought to a Boston hospital after suffering a heart attack.

A crazy day to say the least for Rivers.

“That scared the hell out of me,” he said of the shocking news about Ainge. “We’re basically the same age, and it does scare you because of that.”

Ainge is 50, Rivers 46.

“It makes us all think that it’s time to get a checkup. When you hear that someone you know has had a heart attack, it really gets you.”

So having to tell your team that you’re entering the playoffs without two leaders – one on the court, one off?

“That’s why I looked the way I looked this morning,” Rivers said about his abnormal gloomy mood. “One put the other in perspective.”

Ainge, who played for the Celtics for more than eight seasons after Boston drafted him in 1981, is said to be doing well but will most likely be watching the team he is now executive director of basketball operations of from his hospital bed.

At least for Game 1 vs. Chicago on Saturday.

“The good thing is that he’s doing better,” Rivers said. “Let’s just hope that he gets out of the hospital soon and can attend a game.”
