Sizemore’s Homers Help Tribe Past Padres
Friday, June 13, 2008Posted by Jayk Baechle
Grady Sizemore led off the Indians half of the first with a homerun. More than 5 hours later Sizemore then hit his second HR of the night. The Tribe waited out a 2 hour and 41 minute rain delay to beat the Padres tonight 9-5 in interleague play. Sizemore now has 16 homeruns on the season 7 of which coming in the last 15 games the Tribe has played. This is also the third time this year Sizemore has hit 2 homers in a game.
Indians OF Shin-Soo Choo gave the Tribe the lead in the 6th with a bases loaded single scoring two making the score 5-4. Sizemore would then hit his secondHR of the night in the 7th, that of which being a 2-run homerun giving the Tribe a 7-4 lead, and in the eighth the Indians would add two insurance runs off of the shaky Padres bullpen.
Jamey Carroll stayed hot and went 3-5 and is now hitting .784 since taking over the starting second base job when Josh Barfield was placed on the DL.
When Sizemore hit the HR to lead the game off for the Tribe, it was the 5th time he has done it this season, tying the mark when Kenny Lofton did it 5 times for the Tribe in 1999. Lofton also has the team record of leading off the game with a HR by doing it 18 times; Sizemore has done it 16 times.
The Padres Adrian Gonzalez hit his 19th HR of the season in the 6th, but it was also the 2,500th HR ever hit at Progressive Field (Jacobs Field) which opened in 1994, the Indians have hit 1,381 of the now 2,501 all time homeruns at the park.
The Tribe has now won 4 of 5 games. And they are looking at a matchup tomorrow night of Cliff Lee (10-1 2.52) and Cha Seung Baek (1-2, 5.01).
