Barfield latest Indian headed to DL

Indians second baseman Josh Barfield is the latest to be added to the DL for the Tribe. Barfield in just his second game since being called up from Buffalo taking over Asdrubal Cabrera’s spot on the roster jammed his middle finger on a checked swing.

In the fourth inning of Tuesday night´s game, Barfield quickly tensed his hand on a checked swing. In the process, a tendon at the base of his left middle finger rolled out of its groove and became unstable. It was at first just thought to be a minor injury, keeping Barfield off the field for just a few days, but on Monday Barfield is going to see a hand specialist and he will find out if he will need hand surgery.

Barfield will be placed on the 15-day DL, but could be longer pending a possible surgery. Normally, since Cabrera was demoted to the minors he would have to wait 10 days before he could be called up again. In cases like this, Cabrera could be brought back up immediately due to the injury but instead the Indians purchased the contract of 33-year-old Jorge Velandia from Triple-A Buffalo to fill Jamey Carroll´s utility job with the Tribe and allow Cabrera to work things out in the minors. Carroll will be taking over the starting job at second base.

Jorge Velandia was batting .235 in 16 games for the Bisons. He spent the first part of the season at Triple-A Syracuse in the Blue Jays´ organization. Velandia has played in 166 big league games with the Padres, A´s, Mets, Rays and Jays, compiling a career average of .182.

As expected, Jake Westbrook has been moved from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL because his Tommy John ligament elbow surgery that took place on thursday will keep him out a year to a year and a half.

To make room for Jorge Velandia on the Indians 40-man roster, the Indians designated Buffalo relief pitcher Oneli Perez for assignment.
