What Will the Chargers Do?

With the start of free agency fast approaching in the NFL (March 5th), the San Diego Chargers have their hands full trying to maintain someone at the running back position.  LaDainian Tomlinson (LT) was released from the team on Feb. 22 after playing with the Chargers since 2001. LT in the last 8 years rushed for a total of 12,490 yards. He ran the ball for a total of 2,880 carries. He had a total of 85 rushing touchdowns. LT was indeed an asset to the team, but it was simply just the time to part ways. LT was criticized for not being very productive whenever the Chargers entered the playoffs. In the 2009 season, he ran for 730 yards with a 3.3 average for 12 touchdowns. He has indeed been showing that he may be slowing down in the last few seasons.

Behind LT in the depth chart was running back Darren Sproles. The 6th year running back has also played for the Chargers his entire career. He was really good at being a weapon off the slot pass pattern. Sproles rushed for 343 yards in the 2009 season, but gained 497 yards through the air off of 45 receptions. Sproles had 3 rushing touchdowns and 4 reception touchdowns. However, here have been recent talks that the Chargers denied to resign the five foot six player out of Kansas State University. He now has the option to explore other teams to find a new deal.

If Sproles leaves the Chargers, what will happen in San Diego? The only running back that the Chargers have with previous snaps is Michael Bennett. Bennett rushed for only 2 carries last season and no carries in 2008. He rushed for a total of 65 yards in 2009. Is this the future of San Diego? This is a big question that will need to be answered very soon. The Chargers have the 28th pick in the NFL Draft and many people are very interested to see if they acquire a running back. There have also been talks that corner back Antonio Cromartie has been looking to trade away from the team. He had talks with the Lions, but it was determined two days ago that the deal would probably not go through.

The Chargers indeed have big steps to fill this off season and I really look forward to following them to see what happens. I also would like to see who LT joins this off season to continue his NFL career. Stay tuned and we all will know soon enough
