FedEx Cup 2008

Yesterday marked the start of the second go round for the PGA Tour's playoff system: The FedEx Cup. With a modified scoring system from last year that will make it a more level playing field for the four playoff events, this years competition should be a bit more exciting. Commissioner Tim Finchem and Tour executives decided to reset the points at the beginning of the four tournament stretch; awarding point values that will narrow the gap between the top 144 players and essentially creates a "Seeding" as those players who performed better in the regular season will more than likely make it past the first tournament, The Barclays. 144 players will compete this week at The Barclays, and the field will be cut considerably each week, creating more of an elimination factor. By the final tournament of the playoffs, the field will have been trimmed to the top 30 points leaders, who will playin The Tour Championship @ East Lake GC in Atlanta. .

The PGA Tour created this playoff system a few years ago and instituted it last season, with the eventually winner being who other than Tiger Woods. This year will crown a new FedEx Cup champion, obviously due to the fact that Tiger is out with a knee injury and is rehabbing it for a return in time for the Masters next spring.

The biggest reasons for the change in scoring would be due to the fact that the winner last year only competed in three of the four events. The Tour felt that was not a clear representation of the system they were trying to establish, and have addressed that by effectively penalizing players who skip an event. That would seem only logically from the beginning and it seems that the PGA realized that was a gap in their rules and made the change as soon as they could. Kudos to Commissioner Finchem for making the changes necessaryand doing it the right way, without making it a spectacle in the media.

Look for this year's FedEx Cup playoffs to be a bit more exciting than last years. The field is obviously made up of the top 144 players on tour, and each week those who play the best will move on, making each week more exciting and intense. The young guns on tour will be expected to capitalize on this opportunity and emerge as the next challenger to Sir Eldrick. Who will it be??
