Something missing on Draft night
Wednesday, June 25, 2008Posted by
With the NBA 2008 League Draft less than 24 hours away, uncountable rumors have swept as positioning whispers across the sports landscape. There Rumors of 3 possible players in the running for the number 1 overall selection. There is hushed talk of teams trading down, up, and completely out of the draft. There is even speculation of star players swapping teams.
Although the NBA draft does not get the same hype as other drafts (see the two full day NFL experience on multiple networks); when all is said and done, it may be the most exciting draft out there. Every year, there are a number of scenerios that provide teams an opportunity to change direction and/or improve overnight.
Take the 2007 draft for example. Prior to draft night, there were hintings that Shawn Marion, Kevin Garnett, Zack Randolph, Jason Richardson, and even Kobe Bryant could be had for the right price; and 4 of the 5 were traded. That's not even including the deals that were made that we didn't hear of until draft night or the numerous lesser names and picks that were moved.
With all the action, how can the NBA draft not be a must see event? See, that word action seems to be a hangup for the NBA on draft night. The powers that be have decided that no trade can be officially announced until after the draft has concluded. In an attempt to spotlight a major date on the NBA calendar; the League has actually hurt itself by not including the fans on what is the ultimate day for fans.
The NBA took a step towards generating more buzz for it's draft last year by instituting an age limit to players entering the draft. The League must take the next step and understand that for every fan who has to wait until next season, draft day should be the beginning. The beginning of a new season and a new era. Until fans are granted full acess, the draft will never be an event that captures their imaginations.
